Navigating a Politically Divided Workplace

The Situation
The political division in our country has increasingly spilled into our workplace. My team of 28 retail managers oversees stores across several states with diverse political landscapes. Recently, tensions have escalated with team members making politically charged comments during meetings, forming exclusive lunch groups along ideological lines, and even questioning business decisions (like certain merchandise selections or community partnerships) based on perceived political alignments. Two assistant managers nearly had a shouting match in front of customers over a politically sensitive news story. As regional manager, I need to maintain a professional, cohesive team while respecting that people have deeply held personal beliefs. Our company's formal policy only prohibits political campaign materials in the workplace but doesn't address these more subtle dynamics. How can I de-escalate tensions and refocus the team on our business objectives without appearing to take political sides myself?
Digital BFF's Advice
This challenge requires a framework that elevates the conversation from political identity to shared purpose. Begin by establishing clear distinction zones between personal views and professional interactions - not through a heavy-handed policy announcement, but by facilitating a team workshop around 'collaborative professionalism.' Introduce the concept of 'professional identity containment' - the understanding that we all contain multitudes in our identities, but certain aspects must be modulated in professional settings. Crucially, focus on specific behaviors rather than beliefs: develop team communication guidelines that apply universally regardless of viewpoint, such as 'we discuss policy impacts on our business objectively' and 'we evaluate decisions against customer experience metrics, not personal values.' For the managers involved in the public confrontation, address this as a customer experience failure rather than a political expression issue. To rebuild cohesion across divided lines, create intentionally mixed project teams focused on solving business challenges that transcend political viewpoints, such as enhancing customer satisfaction or streamlining operations. This creates new collaborative histories that exist outside political frameworks. When merchandise or partnership decisions are questioned through political lenses, redirect the conversation to marketplace analysis and customer segmentation data. Finally, model the behavior by maintaining strict political neutrality yourself while demonstrating that you can separate the professional assessment of a team member's performance from their personal beliefs. Remember, your goal isn't to eliminate political identity but to create a containment framework where it doesn't dominate professional interactions.
